Most autos in Bangalore have their meters tampered. Though the official rate is 6 rs a kilometer, it is usually tampered to 7. After travelling in Autos for the past 5 years, i have made a few simple observations about hiring the right autos, and I surprise myself with the number of right choices i have made..
Do's
1. The most simplest one, go for autos with digital meters. 99% of the time, these are clean
2. Go for autos with lot of religious stickers stuck
3. Auto drivers with graying(white and not dyed brown) hair are 99% of the time honest
4. Try to hire auto's which are on the move, and not from the stand.
Dont's
1. Dont take autos from the auto stand, unless they satisfy one of the above criteria
2. Usually all young autos drivers have their meters tampered, unless the above criterias are met
3. If the auto meter is coloured silver and it is not digital, you can be sure it be tampered*
4. If the auto has a lot of stickers related to movies, you usually had it..
5. If the auto meter has a long silver pole(something like a pole) on it, be careful, meters are usually tampered
*Clean if the Do's criteria's are met
While getting down
1. Dont get down from the auto in a lonely place.
2. When i travel at night, I usually get down in front of a police station in my locality, so that the auto drivers don't start asking for extra money
